140 or less
I wish I had the clairevoyance to forsee things like Twitter. Facebook. Even Microsoft Outlook. I use to be proud of my ability to BS my way through HS essays’ minimum page-requirements. Now I can’t express myself without being incredibly wordy. And today, the real world demands concise language. Email. Twitter. Your FB newsfeed. You name it.
It’s just like how the educational system taught us cursive in first grade, telling us how significant it will be from here on out… But riddle me this: Who writes in cursive?! Does anyone even know how to write a capital “Z” or “Q” in cursive? (I bet you’ll google it). Even for signatures, no one signs with their true signature - which is often cursive - unless it’s for a check. Also, these dysfunctional automated signature devices (you know, that thing at Walgreen’s that asks for your signature and turns it into the art of a 3-yr old) don’t help either.
Point is, the current educational system has some holes in its real-world value. It’s inevitable. The world is constantly changing. But it’s interesting to note how QUICKLY the world is changing versus how SLOWLY teaching principles adapt. And many of these principles will not go out of fashion anytime soon.
I mean, I’m still going to have to write that 25-page paper for XYZ class. When it really takes less than half of that to get the same point across. (Concise explanations, by the way, reflects true mastery of a subject).
So what will it take to change our antiquated educational methods? Us.
I say Us because if you’re reading this Tumblr, you probably have one. You probably blog yourself. You probably also have a Twitter…linked to your Tumblr blog, linked to your Facebook. Lastly, I assume you are apart of Generation-Y.
When we, Gen-Y, take the reigns as teachers of the future generation, we will demand what is necessary. Short, concise communication. We are the answer — our society of iPhone addicts, Farmville fanatics, Twitter aficionados. We have normalized ADD and devalued human interaction. We demand to hear it in 140 characters or less. Or else you’ve lost our attention! (75% of those who started reading this post will never get to this line. Congratulations, you are a special 25%).
In addition, we will not teach you cursive. We will teach you how to type on a mobile touch screen! Away with double-digit paper requirement. We demand shorter essays. Straight to the point. Looks like Gen-Z may be in for an age of education were things are directly applicable and value-oriented. Let’s hope.
But in the mean time, @Gen-Y, let’s positively fb-influence the tworld!
Was that 140 characters..?
